Give us the green light RAP: Girls just wanna dance and sing Boys just wanna eat everything Girls just wanna go on about shopping Boys run wild – they’re never stopping Let’s make the house a playground now Mom and dad will get to love it – somehow Dress up the cat and ride this old dog Parents freaking out – they’re going for a jog VERSES: Gimme what I want Gimme gimme what I need Gimme games, gimme food And I’m gonna take the lead, Oh oh oh Bring out the zombies Make the worlds collide I love my minion games So let me be your guide Gimme a cute little kitty Any time of day or night Just let me dance and sing There’s no need to fight Soft pillow cases And lots of teddy bears Cool clothes, strike a pose Cheesy – but who cares We’ll tell you scary stories In many categories Alien worlds, dinosaurs Zombies walking on all fours We don’t scare that easy We’ll go on the attack We’ll show you things that girls can do And frighten you right back MMI Music, (c) 2018 Paul Sedkowski, Elena Yarmysh, Raul Sanchez, Enrique del Viso, Yael Snir, Mikella Jones, Aaron Anderson
Unlike most our other groups, the writing session here was not quite as focused as one might imagine, but it was very animated and fun nevertheless…! 🙂 The girls wanted a song about something cute and cuddly and the boys insisted that it had to include video games, zombies and other scary things. Then someone said it should be a song about a sleepover party… As for the type of musical arrangement, the boys and girls unanimously voted for something fast, energetic and bouncy. After showing them a couple of alternative ideas for an arrangement they all went for the one you’re hearing here. It’s a kind of EDM/pop dance track. With all of the above in place I wrote a lyric based on all their inputs and played in some simple but bouncy instrumental parts, which I showed them the next day. And then we recorded a bunch of takes and shot our videos even before we knew how the FINAL song would sound. Once I finished the recording comps (compilations of the best takes), I completed the arrangement and did an outline production that you’re listening to here. 🙂 Paul

Below are all my notes from our writing session. Out of all the different ideas (below) I selected the theme which the most girls liked, i.e. some kind of a tension or disagreement between friends. All the lines are pretty much verbatim the girls’ own words (as accurately as I could transcribe them in real time). As for the arrangement style, the girls wanted something vaguely in the ballpark of Dua Lipa’s “One Kiss” – and this is what I managed to do within the short time I had for it. NOTES: party, soul burn, best friends breaking up big fight between friends cos one is showing off everyone was invited 2 groups of cool people we’re cooler than you everyone invited except… invitation got lost describe feelings im a really slow thinker ‘i could say that to my dog cry yourself a river, build a bridge and get over it look in the mirror, you already broke it check ebay to see if they have a life for sale that’s rich coming from you you’re a beep… you’re so smelly deodorant breaks before it gets on your skin paid me to come to the party ref: dua lipa one kiss ********************* * summer, beach, pool, relax ball games * my destiny to find my way across about someone stuck in the middloe of an island break through the walls, climb them need to get somewhere ****** friends breaking up you must still think im with you cant take any more of this stress i can never get too close to you even though you mean the most to me i should listen to my heart not to trust you go so soon someone lost their family doesnt know what to do *** i need you i want you need you to be right next to me now you’re gone and cant come back why did you have to go so soon you’ve gone and left me behind theres no one to kiss love or hug now am here alone relationships, friendships ppl doing stuff behnd you back, gossip overdramatic people oversensitive ***** soul burn heartbreaker ***** party when something happens at a partyy it gets out of hand flashbacks war ** jealousy, envy * someone stole my best friend * best friends she think shes the best but i am * she steals from you, uses you to be famous you’re dead to me

The notes below will give you an idea of all the topics we touched upon, but in the end we settled on an “empowerment for females” topic. As for the arrangement style, some of the girls suggested something along the lines of Little Mix. Interestingly, and rather rarely for these types of rushed sessions, Noa contributed the whole first section of the rap, and I used it exactly as she wrote it. Also, the melodies during the “Middle-8” towards the end of the song were adlibbed by each of the girls performing their parts. 🙂 So the present mix is what I managed to do with all that. Here are the notes from the writing session, all girls’ thoughts quoted more or less verbatim: NOTES empowering women role model, inspired by before i was x now i’m x what we do make the world a better place power (me) up – cos im goin to… we proved you wrong we always get judged im not bossy, im the boss we’re like flowers treat us right and we will blossom respected for who we are not in the looks… i will be your role model whatever youre doing, we’re doing in heels we’ll fight for our right and create a new life i’m not your baribie girl i’m who i want to be we girls are empowering the world walking, owning the ground we walk on walk the way you want to talk the way you want to eat the way you want to nobody will judge you look just like who you are refs: little mix ***** every friday partying all night i know im living my life right *** peace relationships in school how i changed over years ** i dream it i want it i work for it ** it’s my life nobobody tells me how to live it wont be distracted by comparisons if we’re captivated by purpose tiny world tiny people song about wiring a song *** inspirational woman food, who doesnt like it i love cheese you love x * i’ll go on strike make world a better place friendship how the world works dare to fail to achieve great outer space if you want to be happy then we’re all beautiful we’re wild here we are book of dreams and meanings, dreams of future or … * monday im in a mood to… * tuesday… warriors ** food like candy ** food gets me high shoes about music or songs * bunch of characters fighting to tell their story ppl bossing you around, give em piece of your mind * im like alice in wonderland lost in a world i never knew looking into a neverending rabbit hole just chasing after dreams the world is topsy turvy mad hatter offered tea never ending nightmare

Again we’ve had a whole lot of different topics here, but in the end the one which all the girls agreed upon with this dreamy vibe which is now the song. A couple of them even wrote the lyrics for a couple of verses which I wound up using in the final version. As for the arrangement style, they wanted something EDM/dance-related – so this is what they got. 🙂 Here are the notes from our writing session. * summer, waterparks * starry night sometimes i wake up at night look up at the sky theres a starry night * we all have superpowers *** getting nervous a million eyes staring at me i dont know what to do ********************* refs: meant to be tonights gonna be a good night im a mess (beba rexha) uptempo ********************* * writing stories * school im sitting doing work ppl whink im doing bad im weird im crazy ** the sea the sea rolls by at night time the city lights shine so bright on the ocean * when will i see you again best friend leaving sleepover candy shop going crazy in a candy shop candy world unicorns squishies school is boring happy i wake up it’s a hppy day im going to rock camp today sad things (what i talk about with my friends) baking chilling how kids do….. what? cant sit sitll friends helping you out

Loads of different ideas here, but in the end it’s a song about life and aspirations, quoting the original ideas of each person as closely as possible (see notes below). Additionally, there are 3 extra raps within the song, each written by the person who performs it. As for the style, they wanted a “general pop” song – so that’s what I tried to come up with. 🙂 Here are the notes from our writing session. i used to be afraid of the dark, dentist, monsters, man next door who shovels snow things i wanted to be everything was possible now i cant do anythng i wanted to be xxx now i know i cant do any of that or all of that ppl who were mean to me made me stronger when ur down u can only go up i feel like all my nightmares are coming true ** fears, phobias when i was young i was afraid of everything now i dare to do anything (except eat goat cheese) ******************** ref: fighter c. aguilera rizzle kicks despacito these days fast or midtempo ******************** * memories from youth * gossip * talk to friends when ur sad * ppl you hate, hating / hitting ppl * time travel song about songwriting football and video games, biking, skiing interests hobbies arguing liars ppl who get mad or offended too easily anger issues manage my anger i bet you that… i could drink more fanta than you etc mental pain likes / dislikes shoes clothes cars celebrities did you know that… relationships my friends know people who like people mean people / demons food i love … they love .. pizza icecream modern tech, gadgets whats popular , whoats hot what not current events ppl are stupid these days manners today ppl who offend me the future predictions in 50 years our school will float holograms will be everywhere we will fly we’ll wear old fashioned clothes heavy makeup we’ll move to another planet space travelling places to see, places to go shopping rap battle any kind of battle

Do you know what I mean? Know what I mean? Dontcha know what I mean! Credits: Paul Sedkowski, George Jefferson, Olivia Serra, Amelia Deardon
After some deliberation we all decided it would be a song about “my generation”. However, I gave it all a slightly different spin than the group, perhaps, intended. But I couldn’t resist it. As for the style, since some of them wanted something retro, perhaps a bit like Amy Winehouse, I took that a step further and… listen for yourself. Here are the notes from our writing session. self-image my generation, compared to the previous they teach us different stuck inbetween generations, i dont fit in problems with friends & fam, school poss refs: feel it still – maroon 5 one more night – rehab **************************************** love, family/friends, internet, games, hacking theres always the one kid you totally hate social media aint social enough for me wrong sense of dress/clothing they bully me cos im a tomboy not a girly girl first to hit purberty i dont like things others like i dont act my age dont know who to hang with i act one way at school, different when with … am a demon with my friends wont swap genders grief am over sensitive wanna punch (the bully) but would get into trouble difficult decisions about future what to do parents go on and on you’re too young for this or too old for that only supposed to hang with ppl my age – else it’s wrong annoying siblings i was too fat fun but stupid stuff? or play safe and be bored? what about love i turn to music as my savior dont know how to feel or act (love) the rebel in me never end ing dream/nightmare never waking up

We discussed this song at some length with Gavin, but in the end, his mom, Denise, wrote a lyric together with him and proposed it to me. With only minimal changes I took it and arranged a song for Gavin, which, I felt, would be the closest to “his vibe” at this point in his life. A reggaeish-pop-kind of thing.
