Esperanza Gallego Puig

(11) Ariana Grande isn’t easy to cover well, especially when you’re just 11. But Esperanza did just that when she performed “Just a Little Bit Of Your Heart” during this year’s Rock Camp. federica machado

Federica Machado

(8) One of our youngest participants this year, Federica did a big job with a big song – “Roar” by Katy Perry. We’re all trembling now! [sc_embed_player fileurl=”https://meermusic.com/rc2015/FedericaMachado-Roar-CoverMix01.mp3″] download-mini

What was the process involved?

Over the period of 5 days, every day each child had only about 10 minutes of “takes” per cover song. So, all in all, just about 50 minutes worth of takes. Typically, a cover session with an experienced singer takes no less than 2 hours. Once the Rock Camp was over, I proceeded to “comp” (compile) all the takes, i.e. pick out the best ones.

Once I had those, I then went on to tune them, if necessary, and occasionally re-time them. But I didn’t go all the way. There are still many “raw” takes left within the recordings you’ll hear here.

Once the vocals were prepared I did a general mix, sound processing, etc.. After I deemed that more or less OK, I then also did some simple mastering on the final mix. And here’s the result. Well done kids! Many of you should consider long-term in-studio artistic development. This is the ideal age to start! 🙂 Paul

PRODUCTION NOTES

  • TITLESweet Time (provisional title)
  • Inspiration: The kids were sharing their funniest stories with each other. Each girl is thus singing the part she herself has inspired (with the exception of Grace who arrived late, but whose lyrics seem to best match her personality). As for the style, it was more or less unanimous that it would have to be some kind of a hip-hop-related pop – so that’s what I did.
  • Recording: between August 17 and August 22, 2015
  • Final Mix: September 6, 2015
  • (C) Written by: Esperanza Gallego Puig, Federica Machado, Julia Sanchez, Mali Brider, Chloe Barnett, Savannah Krier-Sedkowski, Grace Gabriel and Paul Sedkowski
  • Sound design, instrumentation and arrangement: Paul Sedkowski
  • Produced by: Paul Sedkowski, for SIMA, MMI Studios and DJL Music

SONG MAP

*** INTRO

I wanna figure it out… (Savannah)

*** CHORUS (All: 3-part harmonies)

Funny things
Sad things
Happy things
Rad things
So good to be alive

Sweet times
Dope times
Cool times
Rad times
Awesome moments in my life

*** RAP VERSES

I found an iguana in my garden (Lead: Savannah)
One day
My heart skipped a beat I almost stepped on it
He gave me a funny look In the short time it took
So I gave him a push
And he got stuck in a bush

I went out on the sea (Lead: Chloe)
In my little rubber boat I was splashing around
Just the way you do
Then something in the water
Kinda wanted a squish
And I got stung by a wasp
Not a jellyfish

The day I got my cat (Lead: Mali)
It was so tiny and cute I could easily fit him in my pocket
What a hoot!
But then he almost died
He coulda gotten fried
Cos I almost plugged him into a socket
Whoa!

The other day my brother (Lead: Julia)
Put something in my water
I drank a little bit
And then it made me fume
You think it’s funny
I coulda died
And then all day I smelled like cheap perfume

Once when I was sleeping (Lead: Federica)
My sister painted my face
She made me look
Just like a beach ball
Then my brother came by
Started bouncing me around
I swear he always drives me
Up the wall

I was walking one day (Lead: Esperanza)
I was daydreaming – as you do
And I was feeling happy and free I almost flew
And then I felt a pain
Going right through my brain
Because I banged myself
Right into a tree

*** Middle-8

I wanna figure out how I’m feeling (Lead: Grace)
Cos I don’t have a clue
Just talking about it is like healing
I wanna share it with my crew
*** OUTRO
Adlibs: Ooh, ahh, etc (Chloe)
I wanna figure it out… (Savannah)
(All background voice: All the girls)

PRODUCTION NOTES

  • TITLE: “Stupid People” (provisional title)
  • Inspiration: All the kids were talking about their own experiences of someone they knew doing really stupid things. That sounded like a pretty good topic for a song to me. I wrote down all the stories I could remember and put them into a simple verse-chorus-verse-chorus-middle8 type of format. As for the style, Kristina had the deciding influence. She’s so passionate about rock it just had to happen. And since everyone else felt rock was cool too (with pop/hip-hop elements) – here we are.
  • Recording: between August 17 and August 22, 2015
  • Final Mix: September 7, 2015

SONG MAP

*** CHORUS

I know a lot of crazy, stupid people (All: unison chant, Background voices: All taking turns)
They do a lot of crazy, stupid things
There’s lots of weirdos everywhere
If crazy could fly they would all have wings

*** VERSES

My sister fell  (Lead: Juana)
Down a flight of stairs
Even she can’t resist
The gravity
She was tryin’ to do wheelies
On her favorite heeleys
I think it’s crazy
But maybe it’s just me

A guy I know  (Lead: Marina)
Thinks he’s so cool
Jumped from the roof
Into a pool
Didn’t do it for cash
He just wanted a splash
Some girls were impressed
But I think he’s a fool

This dude sat down  (Lead: Itzi)
On an ant-hill, oww
He thought it would be fun
And the ants would run
His butt was steaming
As he ran away screaming
But he’s so dumb dumb dumb
When all is said and done

Hiding  (Lead: Amalia)
In my closet
Trying to scare me
Trying to dare me
Then he fell asleep
Boy he’s gonna weep
Didn’t wanna be mean
But I so scared him

*** MIDDLE-8

If you’re looking for proof  (Lead: Daniela)
Of your sanity
Or just tryin’a discover
Your humanity
If you’re looking for a way
To feel alive
How ’bout something you can survive

I can’t tell you what to do  (Lead: Josh)
You can do what works for you
But if you wanna break away
There’s a million better ways
*** VERSE 1 REPRISE

My sister fell  (Lead: Kristina)
Down a flight of stairs
Even she can’t resist
The gravity
She was tryin’ to do wheelies
On her favorite heeleys
I think it’s crazy
But maybe it’s just me
