This is by far the most important aspect of your entire business preparation and thus much of part 3 of this course is dedicated to it. Still, in this section I just wanted to touch upon some of the most important things and ideas which can germinate in your head until you get to the details in the next section.

All your other promotions, social memberships, forums, blogs, press releases – everything else you’re doing online – should be anchored at your home site. This, in fact, is the equivalent of your office and showcase all rolled in one.
If you’re clever and hard-working, and if you follow the recommendations in the next section of this course, you can organize things in such a way that you can virtually control just about all your other social resources through just your home page, synchronizing all your activities through just one interface. Well… almost. But to an important degree for sure.
This is why when I go on to explain how to set your site up I will only briefly touch upon certain standard options which many musicians go for, i.e. “pre-made” or “turnkey” sites which you can easily “move into” and customize slightly for your needs.
Nothing beats a dedicated home page which you control in its entirety.
Any time and cost savings you’ll achieve on selecting some of those “standard” turnkey sites will be offset by your loss of control and added difficulties in integrating all your various web properties under one roof. And, trust me, you’ll want everything to be as integrated as possible, so as not to run yourself and your team ragged trying to keep up with everything.
One of the most important things you do on your site is to write and blog about it. The importance of this isn’t only to keep your fans occupied and engaged, but – perhaps even more importantly – in order to get the search engines to index your site and list it high in their results for specific keywords. This is one of the most misunderstood and also most important aspects of building your online presence, so a whole lot of part 3 of this course will be devoted to this. But don’t worry, it’s not tremendously difficult, even if it does require a wee bit of effort.
You’ll also need to learn about syndicating content and promoting it to other places on the web. All of this will be explained in due course. For now, just remember that it’s one of those things you’ll need to know how to do – or how to have it done for you.
