Many artists see their music as being “at odds” with business. It doesn’t have to be that way at all. In fact, it really isn’t. But many artists draw a strong line separating the two. And you’ll never hear of them again.

Other artists go further still. If you’re “too concerned” with the commercial side, they say, you’re “a sellout”. Granted, I’ve met many such sell-outs. People who really don’t give a hoot about the art and only craft their music with commercial intent. And here I agree with you. It sucks. I once worked with one of the managers of Fast Food Rockers – a really nice guy. But he said he didn’t actually enjoy music at all…
And then there are others who are simply AWARE of their audiences and their preferences and are able to combine their economic interests with their art seamlessly.
I know I said this before, but it bears repeating:
They have EMPATHY for their audience – a hugely important thing for an artist to have.
With true empathy it is much easier to see how “music” and “business” can in fact be mutually-supporting CREATIVE forces.
In the context of this course, THIS is the kind of approach I’m advocating. There is no other way I know of to LIVE OFF YOUR MUSIC.
