This is a very common misconception. People are only aware of the mega hits and the legends that 90% of all revenues in the music industry are driven by 10% of its artists. The hit-makers.
While this may have been true at some point in the past – although I actually doubt it – it certainly isn’t true any more and hasn’t been true for as long as I have been monitoring this business – well over 30 years.
In the long-term, the real money is in the slow-burning productions.
The ones which never appear to break the surface, but which just keep on giving year in, year out. The combined total earnings of those “minor” songs far outweigh the “hits”.
There are also other things to keep in mind. Whereas in the past market segmentation and radio/distribution-imposed formats dictated what was going to be released (thus artificially misrepresenting what people actually wanted to listen to), with the advent of the Internet there is no practical limitation to the number of styles and genres – and demographics – that can be embraced. You can even have your own personal genre and do well with it!
This spells a fabulous opportunity FOR YOU. And to top it off there is no more need for any middlemen!
